About BFS

Beyer Flight Sciences has extensive experience in the aerospace industry and can provide engineering services to accelerate aircraft certification using model-based simulation.

Beyer Flight Sciences can help customers accelerate aircraft development and certification in Flight Sciences through advances in aerodynamic database development, external loads, and weights management.  The aerospace industry is facing increased competition worldwide, which is driving a need for more efficient and cost-effective methods for aircraft design and testing.  Development programs today balance technical risk, schedule, weight, and cost to optimize value to their customers.

We offer engineering services to help customers refactor external loads processes with use of computational fluid dynamics to reduce traditional wind-tunnel testing for aerodynamic model development.  Our approach leads to more accurate models early in development and enables faster design iterations, reducing program schedules, design rework, and development costs.  Our methodology improves agility to incorporate localized refinement of non-linear regions of the aerodynamic domain.

With engineering services, we can help you architect a building-block process for credibility assurance to accelerating aircraft certification using model-based simulation.  We offer new strategies for long-term persistence and reuse of model-based simulation data.

Beyer Flight Sciences also offers next-generation weights management software and support.  We provide engineering services to help you transition from home-grown legacy systems while protecting the value of legacy weights data assets. We will support pilot projects to help customers evaluate functionality and capabilities. We offer training and support services to help customers fully utilize the software and achieve their goals.

Our Weights Management system has many advantages

  • Our Weights Management system can integrate with other tools and software that you already use
  • Accurate methods for estimating distributed mass properties from legacy vehicle databases in conceptual and preliminary design
  • An extensible data dictionary for tracking engineering BOM and Weight attributes
  • Robust filtering capabilities supporting detailed analysis and reporting
  • Data credibility assurance processes including visualization in CAD using STEP file import
  • Hardware management for consistent mass reporting of standard items
  • Move and morphing transformations of distributed mass properties
  • Support of hierarchical functional coding (SNS, ATA, ANCODES, etc.)
  • Serial effectivity management and engineering change management in support of a stateful representation of all aircraft in the delivered fleet
  • Date and test event effectivities to support conformity of model-based design for test events
  • Automated payload and fuel distributed fuel mass properties development.
  • Ability to extract distributed mass properties from finite element models to accelerate distributed mass properties maturity long before detailed design is complete
  • Automation to conform mass properties into finite element models potentially saving thousands of engineering hours to keep pace with the rate of change
  • Report generation in alternate unit systems including an exploded weights BOM, weight credibility reports by functional codes, etc.
  • The ability to create multiple roll-up reports with OEM attributes

Team

The Beyer Flight Sciences team includes a diverse set of engineering and software development skills and draws on a group of independent consultants.

Mark Beyer

Mark Beyer, the President of Beyer Flight Sciences, has had a 40-year career in new vehicle development supporting numerous aircraft certification projects from small general aviation aircraft, business jets, airships, space launch systems, and transport category aircraft.

His journey began in 1981 as an Engineering CO-OP at Beech Aircraft as a draftsman, joined Cessna in 1983 where he spent 24 years supporting aerodynamics, external loads, and shepherding engineering methods across technical engineering at Textron.  In the mid 90’s Mark developed and implemented Cessna’s current weights management system. Mark later developed and patented aircraft mass estimation processes, winning Textron’s Innovation Award and Cessna’s Information Technology Award in 2005.  In 2010, he embarked on a consulting career, supporting the BD2 airship project for the Air Force.

Mark then joined Cirrus Aircraft in 2012 as a technical lead over Aerodynamics, External Loads, and Weights Management. In 2014, he managed Flight Sciences for the SpaceShip Company’s Spaceship and WhiteKnight space launch system. He subsequently took on the role of Chief Engineer at Mooney International in Chino, California, where he oversaw the development of a pressurized, next-generation, all-composite piston aircraft.

In 2017, Mark joined Dassault Systemes as a champion and vision leader for Structural Integrity and Flight Sciences disciplines coordinating with major Aerospace companies and while coordinating investments with Dassault Systemes’ R&D team. In 2022, he founded Beyer Flight Sciences to develop cutting-edge Flight Sciences methods and offer engineering services support. Currently, Mark is working as a consultant and discipline lead for External Loads, Dynamics, and Weights Management on a Boeing 777-300ER passenger-to-freighter project for NIAR WERX in Wichita, while simultaneously investing in Flight Science Methods for Beyer Flight Sciences.

Victor Graham

Victor Graham is an independent consultant specializing in mass properties engineering and software development. He has been active in the Wichita chapter for 30 years and was named the Ed Payne award winner in 2003 and an SAWE Fellow in 2011.

The first 25 years of Victor’s career were in business aviation at Learjet and Cessna. Experiences included new product development, marketing support, and production support. He also found a passion for process improvement, relational databases, and software development. He was the original author of Cessna’s CLCALC aircraft weight and balance calculator which is now integrated into the CESNAV iOS application.

Victor joined Aircraft Performance Group as a weight and balance engineer and software developer in 2018. He wrote the weight and balance calculator module currently used in the iPreFlight Genesis line of flight planning software.

Victor is currently working as a mass properties engineer for the Textron eAviation Nexus project while also independently developing new mass properties-related software.
